Chuck,
It sounds like you know what you're doing so I'm not sure how helpful I can be, but I too have a Digi002r and had to try different drivers till I finally got things working properly. In my case, I'm running LPX on Mountain Lion on my internal drive and also on a bootable external drive running Yosemite.
I had no problem using the Avid uninstallers when I was trying different drivers. One tip you might find helpful is to download a free program from the App Store called EasyFind. I much prefer this to Spotlight for searches. Once installed and launched, just type in 'avid' and you will see all kinds of avid files and folders (including invisible ones.) Double-click on an file/folder's path and you will be taken directly to it.

The Digidesign CoreAudio Driver v6.1.2 is a single-client, multichannel sound driver that allows CoreAudio-compatible applications to record and play back through the following Digidesign audio interfaces on Mac OS X 10.2.x: Pro Tools HD Accel; Pro Tools HD; Pro Tools 24 MIX; Digi 002 and Digi 002 Rack; Digi 001; Mbox; Audiomedia III. The Digi 002 Rack supplied for review included the 2U hardware unit, CD installers for both Mac and PC, a printed Getting Started manual and a 12-foot, 6-pin to 6-pin Firewire cable.
FYI, I believe I'm using the 11.1.3 driver for Yosemite (and the 11.0 driver for Mountain Lion.)

The Digidesign 002 Rack / Console is still a very common audio interface, mainly because of its high quality. The driver installation in Windows 7 though can be a bit tricky. At first you need the correct driver from here http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/download/Digi-002-003-Drivers. Be sure to download the correct driver for your interface. As of now it looks like this:
9.0.8. – latest version for 002 Console

9.0.6. – latest version for 002 Rack
After downloading the driver simply install click the exe file and install them. In most cases the Windows Device Manager will still show you the Digidesign 002 & 003 device with no driver installed. Then you have to do the following;
– open the device manager
Digi 002 Rack Driver For Mac Os
– right click the digidesign device
– choose update driver
– search the computer for a driver
– choose for a list of drivers on this computer
– all devices => next
Digi 002 Rack Driver For Mac Windows 7
– have disk amd point to this directory C:ProgrammsAvid003 (Console)Streaming
– select the “Avid00Console.inf” file, select Digidesign 002, ignore all the Windows warnings
– check the device manager again => the device should now be listed at audio,video & gamecontrollers
